(Kyodo) _ Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on Monday called for further dialogue with North Korea to bridge the "large gap" between the two countries on the issue of Pyongyang's past abductions of Japanese citizens that persisted in a bilateral meeting last week.

Japan needs to resolve its decade-long deflation before considering an increase in the consumption tax, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's top policy-maker said Sunday. Hidenao Nakagawa, chairman of the LDP's Policy Research Council, said reducing bloated budgets and battling deflation should come before any talk of tax hikes.

(Kyodo) _ Business leaders on Monday voiced expectations that Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi will accomplish his reform initiative following a Cabinet reshuffle earlier in the day. The new government should work "with boldness and expedition" to complete Koizumi's reform program, said Hiroshi Okuda, chairman of the Japan Business Federation.

Speaking to reporters at his office, Koizumi said, "No foreign government should take issue with the way we express our condolences for the war dead."

(Kyodo) _ Japan remained cautious Thursday over North Korea showing its first sign of flexibility over the North's earlier demand that Japan return the ashes of a Japanese abductee. "(North Korea) finally accepted (the fact)...but there is a need to carefully get information on the intent and background of such a remark," Senior Vice Foreign Minister Ichiro Aisawa said in a news conference.
