(Kyodo) _ North Korea on Wednesday demanded that Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and other Japanese politicians stop visiting the war-related Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, calling it "a center for spreading the idea of militarist overseas aggression."

(Kyodo) _ Chief Japanese delegate Kenichiro Sasae at six-party nuclear talks in Beijing on Wednesday dismissed a media report that Japan told North Korea that Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi hopes to make a third visit to Pyongyang. Asked by reporters to verify the report by Russia's Interfax news agency, Sasae said, "There's absolutely no such thing."

(Kyodo) _ The start of the planned privatization of postal services will be delayed for up to one year until April 2008 due to the Diet's rejection of related bills last month, which has caused a delay in the development of information systems, postal privatization minister Heizo Takenaka said Tuesday.

More than 80 percent of the newly elected Lower House members are in favor of revising the Constitution, a figure double that of nine years ago, according to a Mainichi poll. The Mainichi Newspapers polled all 1,131 candidates in the House of Representatives election and 1,108 of them filed their answers by Aug. 30. They included 473 politicians who were later elected to the Lower House.

(Kyodo) _ The stunning victory by the Liberal Democratic Party in Sunday's general election may make it possible for Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to skip his controversial visits to war-related Yasukuni Shrine without worrying about criticism of breaking his promise, a U.S. expert on Japanese politics said Monday.

(Kyodo) _ Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi indicated his firm determination Sunday to continue his controversial annual visit to the war-related Yasukuni Shrine. He said during a series of television appearances ahead of the Sept. 11 general election that he doesn't want there to be any outside intervention in a matter involving his personal desire to pay tribute to the war dead.

(Kyodo) _ Actor-turned-lawmaker Katsuhiko Yokomitsu left the opposition Social Democratic Party immediately after Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi dissolved the lower house for the Sept. 11 election. To SDP was shocked that Yokomitsu, its former deputy chief, had decided to run in his constituency in Oita Prefecture on the ticket of the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan. Yokomitsu, elected four times to parliament since 1993, indicated the SDP's power base is weakening even in Oita, which was once dubbed "a kingdom" for the party, and believed he had no option but to join the DPJ to secure his Diet seat.

(Kyodo) _ Privatizing the Japanese postal system is just the tip of the iceberg of reforms that are necessary for Japan's future, Haruo Shimada, special adviser to the Japanese Cabinet Office, said Wednesday. Speaking at the Forbes Global CEO conference in Sydney, Shimada called the postal system "the cancer of Japan," saying it is a "communist kind of segment in the huge financial market."
