(Kyodo) _ Rakuten Baseball Inc. expects to post a profit rather than the earlier-projected loss in calendar 2005, the first year after its Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles professional baseball team was founded, company officials said Wednesday. While the team is set to finish in last place in the six-team Pacific League in the current season, average attendance for the year came close to the target of 15,000 people per game and sales of Rakuten goods were robust, they said.
Performance-based pay for players has been contained, contributing to the profit, they said. Rakuten Baseball is now likely to register several tens of millions of yen in profit instead of the earlier-projected loss of 1.5 billion yen, the officials said.
Internet mall operator Rakuten founded the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in Sendai to fill the void left after the merger between the Orix BlueWave and Kintetsu Buffaloes late last year.
For next year, Rakuten Baseball expects to post a loss as it plans to spend more than 1 billion yen on enhanced training of players and some 3 billion yen on remodeling of its Fullcast home stadium in Sendai, the officials said.
