Japan Fashion Week opens in Tokyo with gov't backing

(Kyodo) _ A top fashion event incorporating the Tokyo Collection, textile and fiber exhibitions as well as symposiums opened Monday for a 10-day run with government support, in an attempt to shore up Japan's presence on the world fashion scene.
The "Japan Fashion Week in Tokyo" is the first public-private joint fashion initiative. A total of 52 brands are participating in the Tokyo Collection held at two tents set up especially for the event in the outer gardens of Meiji Jingu shrine.

The Tokyo Collection, which has been staged 19 times, was previously held in several venues in Tokyo and lasted longer than fashion shows in other parts of the world, such as those in Paris, New York and Milan, so overseas participants could not attend for the entire period, according to Japanese officials.

The new event is also aimed at promoting promising designers and introducing Japan's textiles and fibers to international buyers. It will provide matchmaking opportunities for textile makers, designers and the apparel industry, the officials said.

On the final day, the "Asian Color Forum" will be held at a Tokyo hotel exploring the latest color trends in Japan, South Korea and China. Representatives of the three countries launched the event last year in Beijing.
